A SKILLED TREATMENT PLAN TO ADDRESS THE DISORDER
ASSESSMENTS
Billings Speech Pathology Services takes pride in providing detailed and thorough assessments.
Evaluations vary greatly based on age and the reason for the visit. A typical speech-language evaluation lasts 75-90 minutes and assess the following areas:
-
Receptive Language - the ability to understand spoken language
-
Expressive Language - the ability to produce intelligible language (grammar, word order, vocabulary, etc...)
-
Pragmatic Language - social language such as making eye contact, turn taking in conversation, maintaining a topic, reading body language, etc...
-
Articulation - the production of sounds and sound combinations to form words
-
Oral Mechanism Structural/Functional Exam (OMSFE) - oral structures will be examined to ensure they are adequate for speech sound production
-
Voice - voice is assessed for quality, pitch, loudness and resonance
-
Breathing patterns - breathing is core to functional swallow and speaking skills and crucial in assessment
-
Peripheral body tension - muscle recruit strength from other areas when overcompensating
-
Fluency - the physiology, physical compensatory patterns, rhythm and flow of speech (disorders are commonly referred to as stuttering and cluttering)

Parental Consultation
If cognitive-linguistic deficits are present, additional testing may include: problem solving, reasoning, mental flexibility, attention, visual processing, memory skills, reading comprehension, social and pragmatic language skills and written language. Testing for cognitive linguistic deficits are more complex and time consuming. Different fees for comprehensive assessment related to these areas will apply.
Swallow Assessment - The normal processes involved in swallowing appropriately can often be interrupted or inappropriately sequenced for a variety of reasons and affects all ages. This can result in a variety of physiological changes that may affect chewing/deglutition; feeding skills, texture aversions; pain or cranio-facial changes. A comprehensive oral mechanism and bedside swallow evaluation will address many of the underlying etiologies of the symptoms presented by skilled and specially trained clinicians.
Not all SLP's are equally trained or experienced in the area of swallowing disorders. At Billings Speech Pathology Services, our clinicians have the credentials and continuing education to properly address this often complicated disorder.
Please contact the clinic in advance to set up an appointment. Paperwork will be emailed or sent to you so that you will have time to fill it out in the comfort of your home. Insurance cards, paperwork and any copay will be collected at the time of the evaluation.
